What the Xeon E-2288G is

The Xeon E-2288G tops the Xeon E-2200 line with eight cores and sixteen threads. It launched in May 2019 with a 3.7 GHz base and up to 5.0 GHz boost at 95 W. Intel positions it for workstations that need the most threads on LGA 1151 with ECC.

Sixteen megabytes of Smart Cache feed rendering and compilation across sixteen threads. The 5.0 GHz boost matches top consumer chips of 2019 for single thread bursts. All core loads settle lower to hold 95 W, which still beats smaller SKUs in parallel exports.

UHD Graphics P630 from 350 MHz to 1.2 GHz drives office displays without a discrete card. The process is 14 nm and the multiplier is locked. ECC memory across two channels protects large projects from memory errors.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The E-2288G fits LGA 1151 on revision 2 boards only. C246 workstation boards pair ECC UDIMMs with display outputs for P630 and power delivery rated for 95 W. Builders who add a discrete GPU can use both graphics for extra monitors.

Shipping BIOS versions from mid 2019 include E-2200 IDs. Early boards may need an update. Revision 1 platforms never support it. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers the board generations.

Single socket towers are the ceiling for this platform. There is no second socket, so further scaling means Xeon Scalable on larger sockets.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

DDR4-2666 ECC UDIMMs in two channels up to 128 GB cover heavy workstation use. Matched 32 GB pairs reach 64 GB for large scenes and virtual machines. Dual channel bandwidth near 42.7 GB per sec feeds eight cores.

Sixteen Gen3 CPU lanes can hold a high end workstation GPU or NVMe RAID when P630 covers basic displays. Many builds pair the chip with a mid range Quadro for 3D and use integrated graphics for documentation monitors. Chipset lanes handle the rest of storage and networking.

Cooling needs a 95 W tower with solid contact for sustained all core boosts. The 75 mm LGA 1151 pattern from the CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide applies. Keep tower intake clear where the GPU exhausts nearby.

Upgrade paths

On the same socket, the Intel Xeon E-2276G offers six cores at 80 W for lower heat. The Intel Xeon E-2236 gives six cores without graphics for headless nodes. Both share C242 and C246 after a BIOS check.

Consumer i9-9900K matches eight cores with higher boost but without ECC for gaming towers. It suits play rather than production where correction matters.

Past LGA 1151 newer Xeon E families need LGA 1200. The E-2288G remains the LGA 1151 workstation ceiling where eight cores with graphics and ECC must last.
