What the Xeon E-2234 is
The Xeon E-2234 pairs four cores with Hyper-Threading for eight threads in a 71 W envelope. It launched in May 2019 with a 3.6 GHz base and up to 4.8 GHz boost. Intel targets buyers who want high clocks with ECC rather than many cores.
Eight megabytes of Smart Cache keep modeling and compilation threads fed. The high base clock sustains interactive CAD work, while boost reaches 4.8 GHz for single thread peaks. Eight threads handle background services without stalling the main task.
There is no integrated graphics on this SKU, so display output needs a discrete card or board controller. The process is 14 nm and the multiplier is locked. ECC support across two DDR4 channels separates it from consumer i3 and i5 options.
Socket and motherboard compatibility
The E-2234 fits LGA 1151 on revision 2 boards only. C242 and C246 workstation boards expose ECC UDIMM slots and management features that consumer 300 series boards lack. Makers list the chip with shipping BIOS versions from mid 2019.
Earlier C246 production may need a BIOS update for E-2200 IDs. Revision 1 boards with 100 or 200 series chipsets never post with this chip. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide explains the split between revisions.
Single socket builds keep costs contained for small offices. Growth beyond four cores means another Xeon E SKU on the same board rather than a second socket.
Memory, PCIe and cooling
DDR4-2666 ECC UDIMMs in two channels up to 128 GB cover CAD towers and micro servers. Matched pairs give dual channel speed for large parts and assemblies. Order 32 GB where virtual desktops share the host.
Sixteen Gen3 CPU lanes feed a workstation GPU or NVMe adapter, with chipset lanes carrying disks and networking beside it. Most tower boards wire the CPU slot as 1x16 for graphics. Check the manual for sharing when two slots are populated.
Cooling uses the 75 mm LGA 1151 pattern from the CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide. A 71 W stock or tower cooler holds boost under office loads. Keep airflow paths open in compact towers where a GPU adds heat.
Upgrade paths
On the same socket, the Intel Xeon E-2244G adds integrated graphics at the same 71 W for builds without a discrete card. The Intel Xeon E-2236 moves to six cores at 80 W for heavier parallel work. Both fit C242 and C246 after a BIOS check.
Consumer i3-9350K gives similar clocks without ECC for gaming rigs. It suits play rather than production where memory errors matter.
Past LGA 1151 later Xeon E generations need LGA 1200 boards. The E-2234 covers clock sensitive workstations where four fast cores with ECC must last.
