What the Xeon E-2224G is
The Xeon E-2224G adds integrated graphics to the entry quad core workstation formula. It launched in May 2019 with a 3.5 GHz base and up to 4.7 GHz boost at 71 W. Intel targets small offices that need display output without a discrete card.
Eight megabytes of Smart Cache support office apps and light CAD across four threads. There is no Hyper-Threading, so four cores give four threads with predictable timing. The slightly higher base over the non G version helps interactive response.
UHD Graphics P630 from 350 MHz to 1.2 GHz drives three displays for control rooms and front desks. The process is 14 nm and the multiplier is locked. ECC memory across two channels guards against bit errors during long uptimes.
Socket and motherboard compatibility
The E-2224G fits LGA 1151 on revision 2 boards only. C242 and C246 boards expose DisplayPort and HDMI for P630 graphics alongside ECC UDIMM slots. Consumer 300 series boards may display through it where listed, but ECC needs workstation chipsets.
Mid 2019 BIOS builds include E-2200 IDs. Early boards may need an update. Revision 1 boards never post. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers the revision requirements.
Single socket towers and small rack nodes suit this SKU. Growth means another Xeon E on the same board when more threads are needed.
Memory, PCIe and cooling
DDR4-2666 ECC UDIMMs in two channels up to 128 GB cover office servers and CAD light use. Dual channel operation aids P630 display throughput. Start with 16 GB for office multitasking.
Sixteen Gen3 CPU lanes stay free for NVMe or networking when P630 handles displays. Add a discrete GPU later where 3D work grows. Chipset lanes carry SATA and USB for the rest.
Cooling uses the 75 mm LGA 1151 pattern from the CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide. A 71 W stock cooler suffices for office loads. Keep vents open in small form towers.
Upgrade paths
On the same socket, the Intel Xeon E-2224 drops graphics at the same 71 W for headless nodes with a BMC. The Intel Xeon E-2244G adds Hyper-Threading for eight threads at the same power for heavier multitasking. Both fit C242 and C246 after a BIOS check.
Consumer i3-9100 gives similar cores without ECC for home labs. It lacks error correction for production data.
Past LGA 1151 newer Xeon E families move to LGA 1200. The E-2224G covers entry displays where four cores with graphics and ECC must run for years.
