VIA NanoBGA2 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit
VIA NanoBGA2 is the soldered ball grid array package that carried VIA Nano Isaiah processors in May 2008. It holds 400 balls in a 21.0 × 21.0 mm package for single-core x86-64 chips. VIA launched the Nano family on May 29, 2008 on the Isaiah architecture from Centaur Technology, built on a 65 nm process, and the package carries over from the VIA C7 family.

Overview
The package matters for this batch because the Nano L2100, L2200, U2500, U2400, U2350 and U2300 are all CNA Isaiah single cores for embedded and small-form-factor boards. Isaiah is an out-of-order superscalar design with 64 KB data plus 64 KB instruction L1 caches and 1 MB of exclusive L2, with SSE through SSSE3, virtualization on later steppings and PadLock security. Idle power drops as low as 100 mW on U-series parts.
Memory is DDR2 through the board chipset over the VIA V4 bus at 533 or 800 MHz. Cooling is entirely device maker hardware, so a processor choice stays within the thermal design the chassis was qualified for, from 5 W fanless boards to 25 W small desktops.
Processor generations
| Codename | Marketing name | Years | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| CNA | VIA Nano L and U series | 2008 | 65 nm Isaiah single cores with 1 MB of L2 cache, including L-series parts to 1.8 GHz at 25 W and U-series parts to 1.3 GHz and up at 8 W from May 2008. |
| Esther | VIA C7 Esther | 2005 to 2007 | 90 nm SOI single cores with 128 KB of L2 cache, including the 1.5 GHz C7 at 12 W and the 2.0 GHz C7 at 20 W from May 2005. |
Who VIA NanoBGA2 serves
VIA NanoBGA2 fits embedded boards, mini-notes and small desktops that pair a Nano L or U processor with a VIA companion chipset. The L2100 at 1.8 GHz and L2200 at 1.6 GHz suit mainstream small systems at 25 and 17 W, while the U2500 at 1.2 GHz, U2400 at 1.3 GHz and up, U2350 at 1.3 GHz and U2300 at 1.0 GHz suit fanless and battery-conscious designs at 5 to 8 W. Every design needs the board maker support list because BIOS qualification is per board.
Memory and cooling
Memory on NanoBGA2 is DDR2 through the board chipset over the V4 bus. Expansion and display hang off the companion chipset because these CPUs provide no expansion lanes or graphics. Cooling uses the device maker heat spreader for the exact chassis, and a Nano part must only replace a chip the thermal design was qualified for, which in practice means no replacement at all.

Frequently asked questions
Which processors fit VIA NanoBGA2?
VIA Nano Isaiah single cores in 400-ball packages, including the 1.8 GHz L2100 at 25 W, the 1.6 GHz L2200 at 17 W, the 1.2 GHz U2500 at 6.8 W and the 1.0 GHz U2300 at 5 W covered here. VIA C7 chips share the package but are different SKUs.
Can VIA NanoBGA2 chips be replaced?
No. NanoBGA2 is a soldered ball grid array, so chips cannot be swapped. A faster VIA Nano means replacing the whole board.
What memory does VIA NanoBGA2 use?
DDR2 through the board chipset. The VIA V4 bus at 533 or 800 MHz ties the CPU to the companion chipset.
How many PCIe lanes does VIA NanoBGA2 provide?
No lanes come from these CPUs. The VIA V4 bus ties the CPU to the companion chipset, while expansion hangs off the board chipset.
