Socket S1 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit

Socket S1 is the AMD pin grid array socket that carried Griffin mobile processors in June 2008. It holds 638 contacts for lidless micro PGA packages on a 35.0 × 35.0 mm footprint at 1.27 mm pitch. AMD launched Socket S1 in May 2006 for Turion notebooks, and the S1g2 revision brought HyperTransport 3.0 with split power planes for the Puma mobile platform while keeping DDR2 memory.

Overview

The socket matters for this batch because the Turion X2 Ultra ZM, Turion X2 RM and Athlon X2 QL parts are all S1g2 Griffin chips for Puma notebooks. Griffin pairs K8 Revision G cores with Phenom-style power management, including three voltage planes on Turion X2 Ultra parts, at 25 to 35 W. All S1 revisions share pins and dimensions, but S1g1 processors are electrically incompatible with S1g2 boards, so Griffin chips need a Puma platform notebook.

Memory is DDR2 SO-DIMMs in two channels through the on-die controller, with no ECC support. Cooling is entirely notebook vendor hardware with heat pipes, so a processor swap stays within the thermal design the chassis was qualified for.

Who Socket S1 serves

Socket S1 fits Puma platform notebooks that pair a Griffin processor with the RS780M class mobile chipset and DDR2 SO-DIMM slots. The Turion X2 Ultra ZM parts at 2.1 to 2.5 GHz suit performance notebooks at 32 to 35 W, while the Turion X2 RM parts at 2.1 to 2.3 GHz and the Athlon X2 QL parts at 1.9 to 2.2 GHz suit value notebooks at 25 to 35 W. Every swap needs the notebook maker CPU list because BIOS qualification is per model.

Memory and cooling

Memory on S1 is DDR2 SO-DIMMs up to DDR2-800 in two channels with no ECC support. Expansion and display hang off the mobile chipset because these CPUs provide no PCIe lanes or graphics. Cooling uses the notebook vendor heat pipe assembly for the exact chassis, and a 35 W Griffin part must only replace a chip the thermal design was qualified for.

Frequently asked questions

Which processors fit Socket S1?

Mobile Griffin dual cores in 638-pin packages, including Turion X2 Ultra ZM parts with 2 MB of L2 cache such as the 2.4 GHz ZM-86 at 35 W, Turion X2 RM parts with 1 MB of L2 cache such as the 2.1 GHz RM-72 at 35 W, and Athlon X2 QL parts such as the 1.9 GHz QL-60 at 35 W covered here. Older S1g1 chips are not electrically compatible despite the pin count.

Is Socket S1 the same as Socket S1g1?

No. All S1 revisions share 638 pins and dimensions, but S1g1 processors are electrically incompatible with later revisions. Griffin chips need S1g2 boards from the Puma platform, so check the notebook maker CPU list.

What memory does Socket S1 use?

DDR2 SO-DIMMs up to DDR2-800 in two channels through the on-die memory controller, with no ECC support. A move to DDR3 means a move to Socket S1g4 with a new notebook.

How many PCIe lanes does Socket S1 provide?

No lanes come from these CPUs. A HyperTransport link ties the CPU to the mobile chipset at 1800 MHz, or 2200 MHz on ZM-85 and ZM-87 parts, while PCIe slots and graphics hang off the board chipset.
