What the Turion X2 RM-70 is

The AMD Turion X2 RM-70 is a 2 GHz mobile dual core from June 2008. It runs two K8 cores at 2 GHz with no turbo, so 2 cores give 2 threads. Cache is 512 KB of L2 per core on a 65 nm process. Power is rated at 31 W on Socket S1.

The RM-70 served Puma notebooks on an 1800 MT/s HyperTransport link with a 10x multiplier. It exists because buyers wanted a 2 GHz Griffin dual core with 1 MB total cache at 31 W between lower RM parts and higher ZM Ultras.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The RM-70 fits Socket S1 notebooks with DDR2 memory and a BIOS that lists Griffin dual cores. It pairs with Puma chipsets contemporary with the June 2008 launch. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR2 in two channels through the on-chip controller.

HyperTransport at 1800 MT/s links the CPU to the chipset. PCIe slots and board graphics hang off the chipset.

Cooling is the notebook vendor heat pipe assembly for a 31 W chassis, with PowerNow trimming clocks and voltage on battery.

Upgrade paths

On Socket S1 the upgrade is Turion X2 Ultra ZM parts with 2 MB of cache on the same board, or a higher RM part at the same 31 W. Beyond Socket S1 a move to a newer mobile platform needs a new board.
