What the Turion X2 Ultra ZM-82 is

The AMD Turion X2 Ultra ZM-82 is a 2.2 GHz mobile dual core from the June 2008 Puma platform launch. It runs two Griffin cores at 2.2 GHz with no turbo, so 2 cores give 2 threads. Cache is 1 MB of L2 per core, 2 MB total, on a 65 nm process. Power is rated at 35 W on Socket S1.

Turion X2 Ultra implements three voltage planes, one for the northbridge and one per core, for finer battery management than Athlon-branded Griffin parts. Its HyperTransport link runs at 1800 MHz with a dual-channel DDR2-800 controller. The ZM-82 sits one step above the 32 W ZM-80 in the launch ladder.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The ZM-82 fits S1g2 Puma notebooks with DDR2 SO-DIMM slots and a BIOS that lists Griffin Turion parts. It does not fit S1g1 boards despite the shared 638 pins. Display comes from the notebook board graphics. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR2-800 SO-DIMMs in two channels through the on-die controller, with no ECC support.

A 1800 MHz HyperTransport link ties the CPU to the mobile chipset. PCIe slots and board graphics hang off the chipset.

Cooling is the notebook vendor heat pipe assembly for the exact chassis, with PowerNow! trimming clocks and voltage on battery.

Upgrade paths

On Socket S1 the upgrade is the AMD Turion X2 Ultra ZM-84 at 2.3 GHz or the AMD Turion X2 Ultra ZM-86 at 2.4 GHz within the same 35 W class. The AMD Turion X2 Ultra ZM-80 at 2.1 GHz drops to 32 W for cooler running. A swap must stay within the thermal design the chassis was qualified for.
