LGA 1700 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit

LGA 1700 is the Intel desktop socket introduced in November 2021 with the 12th Gen Core processors. It has 1,700 contacts and accepts three generations of chips: Alder Lake, Raptor Lake and the Raptor Lake Refresh sold as the 14th Gen. Intel moved its mainstream desktop line to LGA 1851 in October 2024.

Overview

The name describes the design. The motherboard socket holds spring loaded contacts, and the processor carries flat gold pads that press against them, so there are no pins on the chip to bend. The package is bigger than the one used on LGA 1200, at 45.0 × 37.5 mm instead of 37.5 × 37.5 mm. Some references call the socket Socket V, while Intel's own documents label the package FCLGA1700.

The mounting holes for the cooler moved as well, from a 75 mm square to a 78 mm square. A bracket made for LGA 1200 or an LGA 115x socket will not line up, so anyone reusing an old cooler has to check for an LGA 1700 mounting kit first.

Memory is the other change worth planning around. The processors can drive either DDR4 or DDR5, but each motherboard has only one kind of slot, so the choice is made when you buy the board. A DDR4 board lets you keep older modules. A DDR5 board needs new ones and supports higher official memory speeds.

Package size and cooler mounting

The hole pattern is the detail that catches people out. LGA 1700 uses holes spaced 78 mm apart in both directions. Intel's earlier mainstream sockets, LGA 1156, 1155, 1150, 1151 and 1200, all used 75 mm, which is why one cooler bracket fitted so many generations. LGA 1851, the successor, keeps the 78 mm spacing, so a cooler that fits LGA 1700 also carries over to it.

Soon after launch, some builders reported that the retention frame on the motherboard pressed the processor into a slight bow. Aftermarket contact frames from companies such as Thermal Grizzly and Thermalright appeared to even out the pressure. These frames are accessories and not part of Intel's design, so treat them as an optional tweak and not a requirement.

Chipsets, BIOS updates and upgrade options

Every LGA 1700 board belongs to the 600 series, launched with Alder Lake, or the 700 series, launched with Raptor Lake. Both series accept all three processor generations, with one condition: a board may need a BIOS update before a newer processor will start. The tables above show which series is ready for which generation.

If the board does not yet have the right BIOS, the update has to be done with an older supported processor installed, or on a board that has a USB BIOS flashback button, which works without a processor. Board makers publish a CPU support list with the minimum BIOS version for each model, and that list is the document to trust over any general table.

The socket covers a wide range of chips, from entry level Core i3 models to the 24 core Core i9-14900K, so a board bought early in the socket's life can often be upgraded later. The path ends here for mainstream Intel desktops: newer designs need an LGA 1851 board.

Memory and PCIe

Intel lists DDR4-3200 as the official DDR4 ceiling for the two processors documented on this site. The DDR5 ceiling differs by generation: DDR5-4800 for the 12th Gen Intel Core i5-12400F and DDR5-5600 for the 14th Gen Intel Core i9-14900K. Boards and modules often run faster than these figures with an XMP profile, which counts as overclocking from the processor's point of view.

The processor supplies 16 PCIe 5.0 lanes, normally used by the graphics card, and 4 more PCIe 4.0 lanes, usually wired to one NVMe drive. The chipset adds further lanes at lower speeds, and the number varies by chipset model. Check the board's block diagram if you plan to fill several M.2 slots.

Buying LGA 1700 hardware today

Intel has moved on, so a new LGA 1700 build is a choice about what you can buy for the money and not about future upgrades. Before ordering, match four things: the processor generation, the board's chipset and BIOS, the DDR4 or DDR5 slot type, and the cooler's LGA 1700 support. The Intel Core i5-12400F shows how little a build needs when graphics come from a separate card, while the Intel Core i9-14900K is one of the fastest regular models the socket accepts.

Frequently asked questions

Which processors fit the LGA 1700 socket?

The 12th Gen Alder Lake, 13th Gen Raptor Lake and 14th Gen Raptor Lake Refresh Core desktop processors. Chips for LGA 1200 and older sockets do not fit, and neither do the newer LGA 1851 processors.

Does LGA 1700 support DDR4 and DDR5?

The processors do, the motherboards do not. Each board has either DDR4 or DDR5 slots, and the two module types use differently placed notches, so a DDR4 module will not fit a DDR5 slot.

Will my LGA 1200 or LGA 1151 cooler fit?

Only if the cooler maker supplies an LGA 1700 mounting kit. The holes are 78 mm apart, compared with 75 mm on LGA 1200 and LGA 115x. Check the cooler's compatibility list before buying.

Do I need a BIOS update for a 14th Gen processor?

On a 600 series board it is usually required. On a 700 series board it depends on when the board was built. The board maker's CPU support list names the minimum BIOS version.

Is LGA 1700 still the current Intel socket?

No. Intel's newest desktop series uses LGA 1851, which arrived in October 2024. LGA 1700 boards remain usable and keep working with every processor listed above.
