What the EPYC 7551P is

The EPYC 7551P is a thirty two core, sixty four thread server processor with a 2.0 GHz base and up to 3.0 GHz boost. It carries 16 MB of L2 with 64 MB of shared L3 and a 180 W TDP on the 14 nm process. AMD launched it on June 20, 2017 as the top single socket Naples part.

Thirty two cores in one socket cover dense virtualization without a second socket tax. All core boost settles near 2.55 GHz under full load per reviews. The P suffix disables dual socket use at a discount. The multiplier is locked.

There is no integrated graphics. ECC memory with RDIMM and LRDIMM support is standard. Pricing is omitted here because launch lists split between $1830, $2100 and $2300.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The 7551P fits SP3 on single socket server boards. Dual socket boards reject P parts. Check the board vendor list for the exact P SKU before ordering.

Server boards carry eight channel DDR4 and 128 PCIe 3.0 lanes per CPU. Reviews call it a value monster for thread density per dollar in one socket. Rack chassis need front to back airflow with vendor qualified heatsinks.

The chip ships tray only with no cooler. The EPYC 7401P is the 24 core P sibling on the same boards where fewer threads cover the rack.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory support is DDR4-2666 in eight channels up to 2 TB, with ECC and RDIMM or LRDIMM modules. Dense hosts reward capacity first, so 16 DIMMs suit 64 threads. Bandwidth peaks near 170.6 GB per sec.

PCI Express arrives as version 3.0 with 128 lanes from the CPU for NICs, NVMe and accelerators. Cooling uses vendor 180 W server heatsinks with directed chassis airflow.

Upgrade paths

On the same socket there is nothing above 32 cores in Naples, so growth means memory, network or accelerators rather than threads. The 7551P already tops single socket density for the generation.

Moving past SP3 means a new board on a current server platform. Rack owners usually add memory or network cards before replacing processors.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the EPYC 7551P use?

It uses SP3 on single socket server boards. Dual socket boards reject P parts.

How many cores does the 7551P have?

Thirty two cores with multithreading give sixty four threads at 2.0 GHz base with up to 3.0 GHz boost, at 180 W.

What does the P suffix mean?

Single socket only with dual socket hardware disabled, at a discount. It tops single socket Naples density.

What memory does the 7551P support?

DDR4-2666 in eight channels up to 2 TB, with ECC and RDIMM or LRDIMM modules.

How many PCIe lanes does the 7551P have?

128 PCIe 3.0 lanes from the CPU for NICs, NVMe and accelerators.
