LGA 2011-1 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit
LGA 2011-1 is the Intel server socket for Xeon E7 v3 Haswell-EX on the Brickland platform for mission critical 4S and 8S systems. It carries 2011 contacts with a 52 × 45 mm FCLGA2011 package. Intel launched the E7 v3 family in May 2015 with up to 18 cores and 45 MB of last level cache per socket.

Overview
The socket exists for big memory and high availability rather than clocks. Three QPI links per CPU at up to 9.6 GT/s tie four or eight sockets with NUMA effects. Core counts span 4 cores on the frequency tuned E7-8893 v3 through 8 to 14 cores on E7-4800 parts to 16 and 18 cores on E7-8800 parts. Power spans 115 W to 165 W. Memory reaches 1.5 TB per socket with ECC over four channels in DDR3 or DDR4, never mixed.
Because Brickland carries forward Socket R1 across E7 v2 and v3, boards need vendor firmware with the exact stepping. E7-4800 validates to four sockets, E7-8800 to eight sockets. The Grantley LGA 2011-v3 socket shares the contact count but uses two QPI links, so E5 and E7 parts never interchange.

Who LGA 2011-1 serves
LGA 2011-1 belongs in mission critical database, ERP and analytics clusters where memory capacity and socket count beat per core speed. Eighteen core E7-8890 v3 and E7-8880 v3 nodes carry large guests with 45 MB of cache each. Frequency tuned E7-8891 v3 and E7-8893 v3 serve single thread heavy databases with fewer cores at higher clocks.
Boards provide many DIMM slots per socket for 1.5 TB populations with mirroring and sparing options. Redundant power and RAS features decide vendor choice more than chipset brand. Total platform power stays near flat versus v2 despite higher TDPs because voltage regulation moved onto the die.
Memory and PCIe
Memory support covers DDR4-1333 to 1866 and DDR3-1066 to 1600 with ECC over four channels per socket and up to 1.5 TB per socket at up to 85 GB/s. DDR3 and DDR4 never share a board. Address mirroring and rank sparing options protect data with some capacity cost. Populate all sockets evenly for NUMA balance.
PCIe 3.0 with 32 lanes per socket in x4, x8 and x16 splits serves HBAs, networking and accelerators. QPI at up to 9.6 GT/s links sockets, with three links per CPU against two on E5 Haswell-EP. I/O placement should follow NUMA locality in 4S and 8S builds.
Cooling follows vendor qualified server heatsinks for 115 W to 165 W with front to back data center airflow. No retail cooler exists. Sustained turbo tracks inlet temperature and per core power states more than headline base clocks.

Frequently asked questions
Which processors fit LGA 2011-1?
Xeon E7 v3 Haswell-EX parts on Brickland 4S and 8S boards. E7-4800 validated to four sockets, E7-8800 to eight sockets. E5 v3 needs LGA 2011-v3 and E7 v2 needs older Brickland firmware, so check the vendor matrix.
Is LGA 2011-1 the same as LGA 2011-v3?
No. LGA 2011-1 is the Brickland mission critical socket with three QPI links per CPU. LGA 2011-v3 is the Grantley socket with two QPI links for E5 and HEDT. Parts do not move between them despite the shared 2011 contact count and FCLGA2011 package name.
What memory does LGA 2011-1 use?
DDR4-1333 to 1866 or DDR3-1066 to 1600 with ECC over four channels per socket and up to 1.5 TB per socket. DDR3 and DDR4 never mix on one board. Balance DIMMs across all sockets for NUMA locality.
How many PCIe lanes does LGA 2011-1 provide?
PCIe 3.0 with 32 lanes per socket in x4, x8 and x16 splits for networking, storage and accelerators. Eight socket I/O needs NUMA aware placement across QPI links.
