AM4 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit

AM4 is AMD's desktop socket for the Ryzen processors from the 1000 series to the 5000 series. It is a pin grid array socket for processors with 1,331 pins, and the package measures 40 × 40 mm. AMD introduced the socket in 2016 with Bristol Ridge processors sold to PC makers, and it reached retail with the first Ryzen chips in March 2017.

Overview

Its defining feature is longevity. AMD kept the same socket through several processor generations, so a board bought for a first generation Ryzen could often be upgraded to a much newer chip with only a BIOS update. That made AM4 popular for budget builds and gradual upgrades, and it is the reason the platform stayed on shelves long after AMD moved its newest chips to AM5.

The convenience has a price, because AM4 boards span three chipset series with different capabilities and different BIOS limits. The compatibility rules below matter most when you pair a new processor with an old board.

Ryzen 5000 on 300 and 400 series boards

Ryzen 5000 launched in November 2020 with support limited to 500 series boards. AMD later added 400 series support, and in 2022 it announced official Ryzen 5000 support for 300 series boards, starting with a BIOS release based on AGESA 1.2.0.7. Support there depends on the board maker, which means some X370, B350 and A320 boards received the update and others did not.

A BIOS that adds Ryzen 5000 support can drop support for some older processors, because the chip that stores the BIOS has limited room. Before buying a Ryzen 5000 processor for an old board, find the board on the maker's CPU support page and read the release notes for the BIOS version that adds support.

PCIe 4.0 needs a 500 series board

Ryzen 3000 and 5000 processors can run PCIe 4.0 links, but the board has to carry the lanes and the chipset to match. X570 and B550 boards do. Older 300 and 400 series boards run PCIe 3.0, even with a newer processor installed, and so a fast PCIe 4.0 SSD works there only at the slower PCIe 3.0 speed.

Cooler mounting

AM4 uses mounting holes spaced 54 × 90 mm apart, a change from the 48 × 96 mm pattern of AM3 and AM3+. A cooler made only for those older sockets usually does not fit. The newer AM5 keeps the AM4 pattern, so a cooler that fits AM4 often carries over to an AM5 board with the right bracket.

The processor itself is a pin grid array chip, with 1,331 thin pins that can bend if the processor is dropped into the socket carelessly. Lift the retention lever, line up the marked corner of the processor with the socket, let the chip drop in by its own weight and then close the lever.

Memory

All AM4 boards use DDR4. The AMD Ryzen 5 5600X is rated for DDR4-3200, and faster kits are common with an XMP or DOCP profile switched on in the BIOS. Ryzen processors tend to perform best when memory speed and the internal fabric clock stay in step, which is why mid range kits in the DDR4-3200 to DDR4-3600 range were popular choices for this platform.

Frequently asked questions

Which processors fit AM4?

Ryzen 1000, 2000, 3000 and 5000 desktop processors, along with the APU models that share the socket. Processors for AM5 do not fit.

Can I put a Ryzen 5000 processor in a B450 board?

Yes, after a BIOS update that adds Ryzen 5000 support. Check the board maker's CPU support list for the BIOS version.

Does AM4 support DDR5?

No. AM4 is a DDR4 only platform.

Is AM4 a pin grid array or an LGA socket?

AM4 is a pin grid array socket, so the pins are on the processor. AM5 is an LGA socket.

Can an AM4 cooler be used on AM5?

In most cases yes, because the mounting holes match. Coolers that replace the motherboard backplate do not fit AM5 boards.
