What the Ryzen 5 3400GE is

The Ryzen 5 3400GE is a four core, eight thread OEM APU from Picasso. It launched in July 2019 for system builders with a 3.3 GHz base and up to 4.0 GHz boost at 35 W. It underclocks the retail 3400G for slim cases and quiet media PCs.

Multithreading keeps eight threads for multitasking while power stays low. Vega 11 graphics with 704 shaders up to 1300 MHz play esports titles and drive 4K media. Dual channel DDR4-2933 feeds both CPU and graphics from shared system memory.

OEM trays are the only supply, since AMD never boxed the GE for retail. The unlocked multiplier permits tuning where boards allow. Home theater builders get 3400G class graphics without 65 W heat.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The 3400GE fits AM4 on 300, 400 and 500 series boards with Picasso support. OEM mini boards validate the 35 W table for fanless leaning media cases. Retail B450 and A320 boards run it after a Picasso BIOS.

Thirty five watts suits slim aftermarket coolers and pico power supplies. Discrete graphics remain optional, since Vega 11 covers media and light play. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers Picasso BIOS per series.

AM5 boards do not accept the chip. DDR4 kits transfer across AM4 boards freely.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

DDR4-2933 in two channels up to 64 GB is the rated memory. Two fast sticks matter for Vega 11 frame rates in media PCs. Single channel starves graphics and should be avoided.

PCIe 3.0 lanes wire NVMe storage and board devices, with a discrete card slot free in larger OEM towers. Most GE builds skip the card entirely. Chipset lanes add tuners and extra USB for living room use.

Low profile 35 W cooling keeps media PCs silent. The AM4 mount accepts many slim towers for upgrades. The CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide lists low height options.

Upgrade paths

On the same board the retail 3400G raises clocks at 65 W where cooling allows, while the Ryzen 5 3500X adds Zen 2 cores for discrete gaming. Both reuse DDR4. The GE to G move suits bigger media cases.

A platform change to AM5 brings current APUs with DDR5 graphics bandwidth. For 3400GE owners, storage and memory upgrades extend media life most.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the AMD Ryzen 5 3400GE use?

It uses AM4 on 300, 400 and 500 series boards.

Was the 3400GE sold at retail?

No. AMD shipped it to OEMs only, so loose chips come from trays and used office PCs.

How is the 3400GE different from the 3400G?

Lower 3.3 GHz base at 35 W against 65 W, with the same Vega 11 graphics and threads.

What graphics are in the 3400GE?

Radeon Vega 11 with 11 cores up to 1300 MHz.

When did the 3400GE launch?

July 7, 2019 for OEM system builders.
