Socket AM1 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit

Socket AM1 is the AMD socketed platform for Kabini desktop SoCs sold as Athlon and Sempron. It carries 721 contacts in a PGA-ZIF socket with a 35 × 35 mm package. AMD launched the platform in April 2014 with four socketable chips for the value segment. The socket was first branded Socket FS1b before release.

Overview

The platform exists for very cheap upgradable desktops where the chipset rides on the processor die. Two or four Jaguar cores with Radeon R3 graphics cover web and office work at 25 W. Memory stays single channel DDR3-1333 or 1600. PCIe 2.0 with 4 lanes from the SoC feeds one graphics slot plus small slots, with SATA and USB from the same die. Boards stay small and cheap because almost everything sits in the socket.

Because the product is socketed, chips swap freely between AM1 boards where the BIOS lists them. Boxed packs include a small stock cooler for the 25 W envelope. Successor AM4 replaced the platform in 2016 with DDR4, while predecessor FM2+ covered faster Trinity APUs that never fit here.

Who Socket AM1 serves

Socket AM1 fits home office desktops, school labs and kiosk builders who want the cheapest socketed x86 box with real upgrade options. The 25 W ceiling keeps power bricks small and cases quiet. Athlon 5350 and 5370 lead the stack for responsive browsing, while Sempron parts cut cost where threads matter less.

Within the socket the ladder runs from the dual core Sempron 2650 through the quad Sempron 3850 to Athlon 5150, 5350 and 5370. Graphics stay Radeon R3 across the family, so compare CPU clocks rather than GPU tiers. All five share DDR3 single channel memory, so a single 8 GB DIMM covers most builds.

Memory and PCIe

Memory support is DDR3-1333 on the Sempron 2650 and DDR3-1600 on the other four SKUs, always over one 64 bit channel. One DIMM slot pair shares the single channel, so two matched sticks still run single channel. Eight gigabytes covers office multitasking with an SSD.

PCIe 2.0 with 4 lanes from the SoC wires one x16 sized slot at x4 plus an x1 slot on most boards. A low profile Radeon card fits where the R3 graphics run out, staying inside the board power budget. SATA SSDs make the biggest feel difference on these 25 W chips.

Frequently asked questions

Which processors fit Socket AM1?

Athlon 5150, 5350 and 5370 plus Sempron 2650 and 3850, all Kabini SoCs. FM2+ Trinity and Richland parts do not fit despite the PGA form.

Can an Athlon 5350 board run a Sempron 2650?

Yes where the board BIOS lists it. All five retail SKUs share the same 721 contact socket and 25 W ceiling, so swaps are straightforward. Check the maker CPU support list on OEM boards.

What memory does Socket AM1 use?

DDR3-1333 and 1600 over one 64 bit channel. Single channel operation is fixed by the SoC, so one fast DIMM per board is the whole memory system. ECC is not offered on these value parts.

How many PCIe lanes does Socket AM1 provide?

PCIe 2.0 with 4 lanes from the SoC. Boards typically wire a single x16 sized slot at x4 plus a small x1 slot, with SATA and USB from the on die controller. A low profile card suits the 25 W power budget.
