What the Xeon Gold 6154 is
The Xeon Gold 6154 is an eighteen core, thirty six thread server processor from Skylake-SP. It launched in July 2017 with a 3.0 GHz base and up to 3.7 GHz Turbo at 200 W. Eighteen cores at high clocks cover database and HPC nodes where both threads and pace matter.
Twenty four point seven five megabytes of L3 cache feed eighteen cores. The 3.0 GHz base sustains all core throughput, while 3.7 GHz Turbo lifts single thread queries. Three UPI links connect quad socket designs, with 2S common in practice.
No integrated graphics are present. Six channel DDR4-2666 ECC up to 768 GB per socket gives bandwidth for large datasets. Forty eight PCIe lanes per CPU handle accelerators and NVMe.
Intel listed the 6154 at $3543 at launch as a high clock Gold SKU. Buyers chose it for per core pace above core count alone. Locked multiplier keeps data center behavior consistent.
Socket and motherboard compatibility
The 6154 fits LGA 3647 on C620 Purley boards. Vendor support pages name board revisions for 200 W SKUs. It scales to four sockets per node designs, with two sockets most common.
Boards expose six DDR4 channels and 48 PCIe lanes per socket for I/O rich nodes. Power delivery for 200 W sustained loads decides board choice. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers server generations.
The Xeon Silver 4116 on the same socket trims cores and power where cost matters. The Platinum 8180 adds ten cores for maximum threads.
Memory, PCIe and cooling
DDR4-2666 ECC in six channels up to 768 GB per socket is the memory target. Bandwidth peaks near 128 GB per sec with full populations. RDIMM and LRDIMM types both appear in support lists.
PCIe 3.0 with 48 lanes per CPU serves NICs, accelerators and NVMe drawers. Quad socket UPI topology follows board manuals. Storage nodes split lanes across NVMe bays.
Two hundred watts need high flow 2U air or liquid with vendor heatsinks. Inlet temperature and altitude derate sustained boost.
Upgrade paths
On LGA 3647 the step is Platinum 8180 for more threads, reusing board and DDR4. Many Purley boards accept Cascade Lake-SP with a BIOS update for DDR4-2933 and Optane support.
Past LGA 3647 the move is newer Xeon Scalable. Memory and network additions usually precede CPU swaps.
