What the Pentium G4600 is

The Pentium G4600 is a two core, four thread desktop processor from Kaby Lake. It launched in January 2017 with a fixed 3.6 GHz at 51 W. Two cores with Hyper-Threading plus HD 630 graphics cover office towers and entry gaming builds where threads and graphics both matter.

Three megabytes of cache support multitasking with office suites and browsers. The fixed 3.6 GHz gives steady pace for documents and light creation. Fifty one watts fit stock cooling in small towers.

HD Graphics 630 with 24 execution units from 350 MHz to 1100 MHz leads Pentium graphics in this generation. Extra units help 4K output and photo work. Gamers still add a discrete card for play, using integrated output for setup.

On 14 nm the G4600 sits above the G4560 on clocks and graphics. It suits buyers who want threads without Core i3 pricing. Locked multiplier keeps tuning out of scope.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The G4600 fits LGA 1151 revision 1 only. Two hundred series boards accept it natively, while 100 series may need a BIOS update. Revision 2 boards never support it.

The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide explains board matching. B250 office boards pair it with DDR4 for quiet towers.

The Pentium Intel Pentium G4620 adds 100 MHz on the same socket. The low power G4600T is the 35 W alternative for compact cases.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

DDR4-2133/2400 or DDR3L up to 64 GB in two channels is the memory design. Dual channel DDR4-2400 helps graphics and minimum frame times. Two matched modules are preferred.

Sixteen PCIe 3.0 lanes feed a graphics slot or NVMe storage. Entry gaming towers use one discrete card with a SATA SSD. Integrated graphics drive office monitors.

Fifty one watts cool with stock tower coolers on the 75 mm pattern shared with LGA 1155, 1150 and LGA 1200. Airflow decides sustained office pace.

Upgrade paths

On the same socket Core i3-7300 adds cache and clocks, while Core i5-7400 brings four cores. Both reuse board and memory.

Past revision 1 a new board is needed. Graphics card upgrades help gaming builds more than CPU swaps here.
