Motherboard and chipset compatibility
Intel Core i9-9980XE needs a motherboard with a LGA 2066 socket. The table shows which chipset series accept it.
| Series | Chipsets | Support |
|---|---|---|
| X299 HEDT | X299 | Works out of the box The 7000 series launched with X299. The 9000 series refresh needs a newer BIOS on early boards. Check the board CPU support list. |
Board makers publish a CPU support list for every model. Check it for your exact board before buying. Chipset details for LGA 2066.

What the Core i9-9980XE is
The Core i9-9980XE is an eighteen core, thirty six thread HEDT processor with a 3.0 GHz base, up to 4.4 GHz turbo and up to 4.5 GHz on favored cores. It carries 24.75 MB of shared L3 cache and a 165 W TDP on the 14 nm process. Intel announced it on October 8, 2018 as the Extreme Edition flagship of the 9th Gen Core X refresh.
Eighteen cores top the Skylake-X stack for renders, simulation and heavy compilation in a single socket tower. The base clock sits lowest in the range to hold thermals, with boost covering bursts. The multiplier is unlocked for tuning on X299 boards.
There is no integrated graphics, so a separate card is required. The launch price was $1979 Intel RCP. Boards need an X299 BIOS with 9th Gen X support from late 2018.
Socket and motherboard compatibility
The 9980XE fits LGA 2066 on X299 motherboards with quad channel DDR4. Boards sold before the 9th Gen launch need a BIOS update with the new IDs before the chip will start. Only boards with strong power delivery suit eighteen cores under sustained load.
X299 carries the chip with up to 68 platform PCIe lanes across CPU and chipset links. A full tower with directed airflow and a capable liquid loop is the realistic cooling for all core sessions. Check the maker CPU list for the minimum BIOS per board.
The chip ships without any cooler and mounts on the large LGA 2066 pattern. The Intel Core i9-10980XE is the later 18 core successor on the same boards with faster memory support and a lower launch price.
Memory, PCIe and cooling
Memory support is DDR4-2666 in four channels up to 128 GB, with up to 85 GB per sec of bandwidth. ECC is not supported. Eighteen cores reward full population, so 8 by 8 GB or 8 by 16 GB suits flagship workstation use where boards carry eight slots.
PCI Express arrives as version 3.0 with 44 lanes from the CPU for graphics and NVMe arrays. Multi GPU renders and storage arrays fit the lane budget of a flagship tower. Cooling needs a capable liquid loop at 165 W, with sustained all core clocks tracking cooling quality.
Upgrade paths
On the same socket there is nothing above eighteen cores, so growth means memory, storage or graphics rather than threads. Owners coming from smaller Skylake-X chips more than double their threads in one drop-in while keeping board and DDR4.
Moving past LGA 2066 means a new board and usually DDR5 on current platforms. The 9980XE exists to delay that move with flagship threads on installed DDR4.
