What the Core i7-7800X is

The Core i7-7800X is a six core, twelve thread HEDT processor from Skylake-X. It launched in June 2017 with a 3.5 GHz base and up to 4.0 GHz Turbo at 140 W. Six cores with quad channel memory cover entry creation where threads and bandwidth beat mainstream quad cores.

Eight point two five megabytes of L3 cache feed rendering across six cores. The 3.5 GHz base sustains all core loads, while 4.0 GHz burst lifts single thread work. One hundred forty watts need tower cooling on the large HEDT mount.

No integrated graphics are present, so a discrete card is required. Quad channel DDR4-2400 up to 128 GB doubles mainstream bandwidth for large projects. The multiplier is unlocked for X299 tuning.

Intel placed the 7800X as the entry Skylake-X below the 7820X. Creators chose it for lanes and channels at lower cost than ten core parts. Used prices fell as later HEDT generations arrived.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The 7800X fits LGA 2066 on X299 boards. Unlike Kaby Lake-X, Skylake-X stayed supported through later BIOS updates. Check the maker list for the exact board revision.

Boards wire four memory channels and up to 44 lanes depending on CPU, with 28 lanes on this SKU. Three graphics slots and M.2 arrays split lanes per manual. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide explains lane differences.

The Core i7-7820X on the same socket adds two cores for heavier creation. Kaby Lake-X 7740X trims cores where clocks matter more.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

DDR4-2400 in four channels up to 128 GB is the memory target. Four DIMMs hold quad channel mode for bandwidth near 76.8 GB per sec. Eight DIMMs add capacity where boards allow it.

Twenty eight PCIe 3.0 lanes feed graphics plus NVMe arrays. Single GPU plus two NVMe drives fit comfortably. Multi GPU plans favor 44 lane SKUs instead.

One hundred forty watts cool with tower air or liquid on the square mount. Even pressure per manual matters on the large package. Chassis airflow decides sustained all core pace.

Upgrade paths

On X299 the step is 7820X or 7900X for cores and lanes, reusing board and DDR4. The jump helps rendering timelines directly.

Past LGA 2066 a new platform is required. Coolers with LGA 2066 kits often carry across with new mounting.
