Intel Core i9-9900KF socket: LGA 1151

The Intel Core i9-9900KF uses the LGA 1151 socket on revision 2 boards. It matches the 8-core Coffee Lake Refresh flagship in every way except graphics, so a separate card is mandatory on 300 series boards.

Recommended GPU pairing

Recommended tierHigh-end 1440p
Example GPUsGeForce RTX 2080, Radeon RX 5700 XT
Target resolution1440p high settings

Eight cores with boost to 5.0 GHz, 16 PCIe 3.0 lanes and DDR4 match high-end 1440p cards from early 2019. A faster card still works and the balance shifts with game, settings and resolution.

This is a rough match for a new build at the stated resolution, not a limit. A faster card still works and helps at higher resolutions or in games that load the GPU more than the CPU. A slower card is fine for lighter games and office use. The exact balance shifts with the game, the settings and the resolution, so no percentage is given.

What the Core i9-9900KF is

The Core i9-9900KF is an eight core, sixteen thread processor that Intel released in early 2019 alongside the 9th Gen desktop range. Its cores run 3.6 GHz base to 5.0 GHz turbo with Turbo Boost 2.0. Cache is 16 MB of shared L3.

The F suffix marks the single difference from the K: the integrated GPU is disabled, so the chip has no display output of its own. Compute ratings are identical at 95 W TDP on the 14 nm process.

The multiplier is unlocked. On memory tuning, Z390 and Z370 boards accept XMP kits past DDR4-2666 while H-series and B-series boards hold narrower ranges, so the board decides how far a kit runs.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The 9900KF fits the LGA 1151 socket on revision 2 boards only. Z390 and B365 boards accept it with the shipping BIOS. Z370, H370, B360, H310 and Q370 boards need a BIOS update carrying 9th Gen support. Revision 1 boards with 100 or 200 series chipsets never support it, whatever the BIOS says.

Because there is no integrated graphics, the board's display outputs stay dark through every boot stage. Setup and troubleshooting need a discrete card. A Z-series board is required for multiplier overclocking.

Confirm the minimum BIOS version in the maker's CPU support list, particularly on early Z370 boards.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

The memory controller supports DDR4 up to 2666 MT/s officially. Two channels carry up to 128 GB. Video encoding falls to the discrete card, so creator builds should weigh its media block.

The CPU supplies 16 PCIe 3.0 lanes for the discrete graphics card. All monitors connect to the discrete card, and fast storage hangs off chipset lanes.

Cooling should exceed the 95 W base rating under boost. Plan a capable tower cooler or liquid cooler on the 75 mm LGA 1151 pattern. The CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide lists bracket requirements.

Revision 2 only, and the two revisions never mix

The LGA 1151 revision split is the defining fact of this platform. Revision 1 covers 6th and 7th Gen chips on 100 and 200 series boards, while revision 2 covers 8th and 9th Gen on 300 series boards. The two revisions share a physical socket but never mix, so a 9th Gen chip on a Z270 board will not start.

Within revision 2 the 9900KF sits at the top with the K, offering the full eight cores and 5.0 GHz peak for gaming builds that always carry a discrete card. Without onboard graphics, a failed boot shows nothing on screen, so keep a known-good discrete card handy.

Upgrade paths

Against the Intel Core i9-9900K, the KF performs identically wherever a discrete card is fitted, for a lower price. Against the Intel Core i9-9900KS, it gives up binned silicon and all-core 5.0 GHz for savings.

Moving to LGA 1200 or LGA 1700 needs a new board, and DDR5 builds need new memory too. The 9900KF fits a Z390 gaming PC that will always carry a discrete card.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the Intel Core i9-9900KF use?

It uses LGA 1151 on revision 2 boards with 300 series chipsets, written FCLGA1151 in Intel's documents. A discrete graphics card is required.

What is the difference between the 9900KF and the 9900K?

The KF drops the integrated GPU. Pick the K when Quick Sync encoding or troubleshooting without a card matters.

Does the 9900KF run in a Z270 motherboard?

No. Z270 and other 100 and 200 series boards are revision 1 and never support 9th Gen processors.

Which boards need a BIOS update for the 9900KF?

Z390 and B365 boards accept it from the start. Z370, H370, B360, H310 and Q370 boards need a BIOS update with 9th Gen support.

Does the 9900KF come with a cooler?

No. KF-series processors ship without a cooler.
