What the Sempron 3100+ is
The AMD Sempron 3100+ is a 1.8 GHz low-power single core from January 2005. It runs one K8 core at 1.8 GHz with no turbo, so 1 core gives 1 thread. Cache is 256 KB of L2 on a 90 nm process. Power is rated at 25 W on Socket 754.
The Sonora 3100+ served thin notebooks on an 800 MT/s HyperTransport link with a 9x multiplier. It exists because buyers wanted a 1.8 GHz Sempron with 256 KB of cache at low power. Note that desktop Georgetown, Palermo and Albany parts and Roma low-power parts share the 3100+ number with different power and need different boards.
Socket and motherboard compatibility
The 3100+ fits Socket 754 notebooks with DDR memory and a BIOS that lists Sonora low-power parts. It does not fit desktop Socket 754 boards qualified only for 62 W parts despite the shared number. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules.
Memory, PCIe and cooling
Memory is DDR in a single channel through the on-chip controller.
HyperTransport at 800 MT/s links the CPU to the chipset. PCIe or AGP slots hang off the chipset.
Cooling is the notebook vendor heat pipe assembly for a 25 W chassis, with PowerNow trimming clocks and voltage on battery.
Upgrade paths
On Socket 754 the upgrade is the Sempron 3400+ low-power part at 2 GHz with 256 KB at the same 25 W, or the AMD Mobile Athlon 64 2700+ at 1.6 GHz for a full Athlon 64 cache. Beyond Socket 754 a move to Socket S1 needs a new board for Turion mobiles.
Frequently asked questions
