What the Ryzen 7 PRO 1700X is

The Ryzen 7 PRO 1700X is an eight core, sixteen thread desktop processor with a 3.4 GHz base and up to 3.8 GHz boost. It carries 4 MB of L2 with 16 MB of shared L3 and a 95 W TDP on the 14 nm process. AMD launched it on June 29, 2017 with the PRO line for business workstations.

It adds 400 MHz base over the PRO 1700 in the same core count for single threaded CAD beside threaded builds. Business firmware brings GuardMI, DASH and image stability. The multiplier is unlocked.

There is no integrated graphics, so a separate card is required. Supply runs OEM tray only with no boxed cooler and no public SEP. ECC works where the board supports it.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The PRO 1700X fits AM4 on 300, 400 and 500 series boards. Commercial buyers should check the board maker CPU support list for the exact PRO model. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide lists board support by series.

A discrete workstation card covers CAD triples. The 95 W rating asks for a real tower cooler rather than a stock unit. The AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 1700 is the 65 W sibling on the same boards for quieter fleets.

Installation follows the usual AM4 routine. Lift the retention lever, line up the marked corner, let the chip settle by its own weight and close the lever.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

The memory controller supports DDR4-2666 in two channels up to 64 GB on launch BIOS, board dependent. Two matched sticks give dual channel speed for threaded workstation loads. ECC unbuffered DIMMs work where the board wires them.

PCI Express arrives as version 3.0 with 16 lanes from the CPU for graphics and storage. A workstation card and an NVMe drive fit the lane budget of a managed tower. Cooling follows the 95 W envelope with tower air on the AM4 pattern.

Upgrade paths

On the same socket the natural moves are higher core PRO parts of later generations where board BIOS allows it, keeping DDR4. Fleet images stay on one baseline, so refreshes happen by model.

Moving past AM4 to AM5 needs a new board and DDR5 memory. The PRO 1700X holds workstation images stable on installed boards.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the Ryzen 7 PRO 1700X use?

It uses AM4 on 300, 400 and 500 series boards with a BIOS that lists the PRO part.

How many cores does the PRO 1700X have?

Eight cores with multithreading give sixteen threads at 3.4 GHz base with up to 3.8 GHz boost, at 95 W.

What does PRO add over the consumer version?

GuardMI security, DASH manageability and image stability for fleets. Clocks top the PRO 8 core stack.

Does the PRO 1700X come with a cooler?

None, it ships OEM tray only. Builders fit a 95 W capable tower cooler.

How does the PRO 1700X differ from the PRO 1700?

The AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 1700 runs 3.0 GHz base at 65 W on the same boards. The X adds clocks with more heat.
