What the GX-224IJ is

The GX-224IJ is a two core, two thread embedded system on chip from Prairie Falcon. It launched in February 2016 with a 2.4 GHz base and up to 2.8 GHz boost at 10 W, configurable up to 15 W. Two Excavator cores cover thin clients, casino gaming and industrial control where graphics and longevity matter more than raw pace.

One megabyte of shared L2 cache feeds two cores. The 2.4 GHz base sustains interactive terminals, while 2.8 GHz boost lifts single thread peaks. Ten watts fit fanless boxes with small spreaders.

Radeon R4E Graphics with 3 compute units up to 600 MHz drives two displays with 4K H.265 decode. Hardware encode and decode keep signage playback off the CPU cores. There is no multithreading beyond two threads.

On 28 nm the 224IJ solders to embedded boards with DDR4 or DDR3. AMD announced Prairie Falcon and Brown Falcon together in February 2016 with pin compatibility to R-Series SoCs. Ten year planned longevity suits industrial designs.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The GX-224IJ solders to Socket FP4 on embedded boards. There is no socketed version and no retail boxed part. Board makers tune passive cases around the 10 to 15 W envelope.

Boards pair the SoC with single channel DDR4-2133 or DDR3-1866 plus SATA and USB for terminals. Thin clients boot from small SSDs. The LGA, PGA and BGA: CPU package types explained guide explains soldered embedded trade offs.

The GX-215JJ on the same socket trims clocks and graphics where power matters most. The AMD GX-212JJ Prairie Falcon part is a nearby lower power option on FP4.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Single channel 64-bit DDR4-2133 or DDR3-1866 is the memory design. Bandwidth peaks near 17.1 GB per sec on DDR4. ECC is not supported on this G-series SKU.

Eight PCIe 3.0 lanes from the SoC wire storage and networking through the board. Typical terminals give four lanes to SATA and USB controllers. Speeds suit boot images and signage content.

Ten watts cool passively with a spreader to the case. Sealed boxes survive dust prone counters. Storage swaps are the main service item.

Upgrade paths

There is no processor upgrade on soldered FP4. The chip stays with the board for its life. Buyers choose graphics tier at order time, since R4E against R2E decides display headroom.

Inside Prairie Falcon the sideways move is the GX-215JJ for lower power. Past G-series the jump is to R-series SoCs on pin compatible footprints where boards allow it.
