What the GX-220IJ is

The GX-220IJ pairs two Excavator cores without multithreading for thin client duty. It launched in June 2018 with a 2.0 GHz base and up to 2.2 GHz boost at 10 W. AMD positions it for kiosk and industrial boards that need x86 with basic graphics.

One megabyte of shared L2 backs office tasks without L3. The modest clocks stretch efficiency in sealed boxes. Two threads handle single app plus background services.

Radeon R2E graphics with 2 compute units up to 600 MHz drive displays without a discrete card. The process is 28 nm and the multiplier is locked. Memory is DDR3 in two channels on capable boards.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The GX-220IJ solders to Socket FP4 permanently. Embedded vendors tune the 10 W envelope with conduction cooling and a 15 W configurable up option for larger displays. There is no socketed path.

Memory is DDR3-2133 in two channels with up to 34.1 GB per sec on dual designs. Single channel wiring appears on cost reduced boards. The How to find your CPU socket type guide shows where specs list Socket FP4.

BGA 769 naming in some databases matches the 769 ball count of FP4. Other embedded sockets with different counts do not accept this SoC. Board replacement is the service model.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

DDR3-2133 in two channels suits thin clients with small SSDs. Matched pairs help R2E graphics smoothness. Start with 4 GB for single app use and 8 GB where browsers stay open.

PCIe 3.0 with up to 8 lanes from the APU feeds NVMe or board devices per embedded layout. Many thin boards use eMMC plus a single M.2 instead of full slots. Lane splits follow the vendor manual.

Cooling is passive conduction for 10 W with a 15 W up option where chassis allow more heat. No retail pattern exists. Keep vents free where fans assist larger enclosures.

Upgrade paths

Soldered BGA blocks CPU upgrades. Larger storage and memory where sockets allow extend kiosk life. Board refresh restores performance after years of dust.

Within Socket FP4, the AMD GX-212JJ trims to 6 W with R1E graphics for smaller nodes. Larger Prairie Falcon SKUs add threads where boards support them. All share the same soldered tooling.

Past FP4 newer embedded families need different sockets. The GX-220IJ covers basic x86 display where two cores must run cool for years.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the AMD GX-220IJ use?

It uses Socket FP4 soldered to the embedded board.

How many cores does the GX-220IJ have?

Two cores without multithreading give two threads. Base is 2.0 GHz with boost to 2.2 GHz.

Can the GX-220IJ be upgraded?

No. It solders directly, so board replacement is the only path.

What memory does the GX-220IJ support?

DDR3-2133 in two channels on capable boards.

When did the GX-220IJ launch?

June 2018 with Prairie Falcon G-series.
