Slot 1 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit

Slot 1 is the Intel 242-lead single-edge slot that carried Pentium II, Pentium III and Celeron cartridges for desktops. It uses the SECC and SECC2 cartridge format with GTL+ bus protocol at 100 and 133 MT/s.

Overview

The slot served desktops from May 1997 with Katmai and Coppermine parts up to 1000 MHz. Socket 370 superseded it for Coppermine and Tualatin PGA parts.

Who Slot 1 serves

Slot 1 targets late Pentium II and Pentium III desktops with cartridge cooling and SDRAM. Boards with 440BX chipsets pair the slot with PC100 memory and AGP 2X slots. Retention cages carry the SECC package.

Memory and cooling

Memory is SDRAM through the board chipset at the cartridge bus rate. Cooling uses SECC cartridge heatsinks locked to the retention cage. Late Coppermine cartridges share the slot with their own BIOS strings.

Frequently asked questions

Which processors fit Slot 1?

Coppermine Pentium III cartridges with 256 KB of full-speed L2 cache, including the 1000 MHz 1000B part at 33 W from March 2000 covered here.

Is Slot 1 the same as Slot 2?

No. Slot 1 is a 242-lead desktop slot for Pentium II and III cartridges, while Slot 2 is a 330-lead server slot for Xeon cartridges. The cartridges differ in size and pinout.

What memory does Slot 1 use?

SDRAM through the board chipset, commonly PC100 and PC133 pairs on 440BX boards. The board sets the exact type.

How many PCIe lanes does Slot 1 provide?

No lanes come from these CPUs. A 100 or 133 MT/s bus ties the cartridge to the board chipset, while AGP and PCI hang off the chipset.
