LGA 4189 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit

LGA 4189 is Intel's server socket for Cooper Lake-SP and Ice Lake-SP Xeon Scalable processors plus Ice Lake-W Xeon W-3300 workstation parts. It is a land grid array socket with 4,189 contacts in a 77.5 × 56.5 mm package. Intel introduced the socket in April 2020 with Cooper Lake, and Ice Lake-SP followed on the same socket name in April 2021.

Overview

The socket pairs DDR4 memory with ECC and multi-socket boards for cloud, enterprise and workstation systems. Cooper Lake-SP covers 4-socket and 8-socket servers on the Cedar Island platform, while Ice Lake-SP covers 1-socket and 2-socket servers and Xeon W-3300 covers single-socket workstations on Whitley boards. Against the older LGA 3647 with 6 memory channels, LGA 4189 keeps 6 channels on Cooper Lake and moves to 8 channels on Ice Lake-SP.

Because two board generations share the socket name, the processor generation decides the board, not the socket alone. Cedar Island boards accept Cooper Lake-SP H and HL parts, while Whitley boards accept Ice Lake-SP and Xeon W-3300 parts. The rest of this page explains the split and the memory and I/O each generation provides.

Two revisions, one socket name

Two board revisions share the LGA 4189 name and they do not mix. Socket P5 on the Cedar Island platform takes Cooper Lake-SP parts, while Socket P4 on the Whitley platform takes Ice Lake-SP and Xeon W-3300 parts. A Cooper Lake H chip will not run in a Whitley Ice Lake board, and an Ice Lake-SP chip will not run in a Cedar Island Cooper board.

The split catches buyers who shop by socket name alone. Used listings often print only LGA 4189, so confirm the platform code and the board CPU support list before paying. Server vendors publish the supported processor list per board, and that list is the final word on fit.

When moving between generations, budget for a board with the processor. A 4-socket Cooper Lake Gold system cannot take Ice Lake-SP Silver chips later, and a Whitley workstation cannot take Cooper Lake H chips. The socket name stays the same while the platform changes underneath.

Memory and I/O per generation

Memory on LGA 4189 is DDR4 with ECC on every part in this batch. Cooper Lake-SP runs 6 channels per socket with speeds to DDR4-3200 depending on the model, and H suffix parts address up to 1.12 TB per socket while HL suffix parts reach the large 4.5 TB tier. Ice Lake-SP and Xeon W-3300 run 8 channels per socket, with Silver parts at DDR4-2666 and workstation parts at DDR4-3200.

Capacity planning differs by suffix. Standard H parts suit dense compute with up to 1.12 TB per socket, while HL parts suit in-memory databases with the 4.5 TB tier. Ice Lake-SP scales to 6 TB per socket on models such as the Silver 4314, with Optane persistent memory as a board option.

I/O follows the generation as well. Ice Lake-SP and Xeon W-3300 supply up to 64 PCIe 4.0 lanes per socket for fast NVMe storage and accelerators. Cooper Lake-SP supplies 48 PCIe 3.0 lanes per socket with 6 UPI links at 10.4 GT/s for multi-socket coherence. Ice Lake-SP Silver parts carry 2 UPI links, and workstation W-3300 parts carry none as single-socket chips.

Choosing boards and buying used

New builds on this socket now come from remaining stock, since Intel has since released LGA 4677 platforms. For a 4-socket or 8-socket Cooper Lake system, match H or HL parts to a Cedar Island board from the same vendor family and check the memory tier the workload needs. For a 1-socket or 2-socket Ice Lake system, match Silver parts to a Whitley board with the needed drive and network slots.

Used buyers should verify three items in order: the processor model and suffix, the board platform code, and the memory population the board ships with. Suffixes change behavior here, with HL unlocking the large memory tier and Y, T and similar letters marking specialized thermal or network variants on later generations.

Cooling follows the board vendor list on every LGA 4189 system. There is no retail mounting pattern, so air and liquid heatsinks come from the board or system maker. Multi-socket boards need matched heatsinks with directed chassis airflow, and 250 W and 270 W parts need the high performance heatsink class the vendor specifies.

Frequently asked questions

Which processors fit LGA 4189?

Cooper Lake-SP Xeon Gold H and Platinum H and HL parts for 4-socket and 8-socket servers, Ice Lake-SP Xeon Silver and Gold parts for 1-socket and 2-socket servers, and Ice Lake-W Xeon W-3300 parts for single-socket workstations.

Can a Cooper Lake processor run in an Ice Lake-SP board?

No. Although both use the LGA 4189 name, the Cedar Island boards for Cooper Lake and the Whitley boards for Ice Lake-SP are not interchangeable. Match the processor generation to the board generation before buying.

What memory does LGA 4189 use?

DDR4 with ECC. Cooper Lake-SP uses 6 channels per socket, while Ice Lake-SP and Xeon W-3300 use 8 channels per socket. Exact speeds and capacity follow the board and processor.

How many PCIe lanes does LGA 4189 provide?

Ice Lake-SP and Xeon W-3300 provide up to 64 PCIe 4.0 lanes per socket. Cooper Lake-SP provides 48 PCIe 3.0 lanes per socket.

What came before and after LGA 4189?

LGA 3647 was the previous server socket. LGA 4677 is the newer platform for Sapphire Rapids and later workstation and server parts.
