Socket G34 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit

Socket G34 is the AMD land grid server socket for multi-chip module Opteron 6000 processors. It carries 1974 contacts while the CPU package seats 1944 lands. AMD launched the socket in March 2010 with Magny-Cours, followed by Interlagos, Abu Dhabi and finally Warsaw in January 2014. Boards scale to four sockets with dual die packages.

Overview

The socket exists for dense integer servers where core count beats per core speed. Two Piledriver dies per package reach 12 and 16 cores with 16 MB of L3 cache at 99 W on Warsaw P parts. Four DDR3 channels with ECC feed each socket. HyperTransport 3.1 links connect the on package dies and tie sockets together, while PCIe Gen 2 slots hang off the SR5600 series chipset.

Because the platform spans four processor generations, firmware must list the exact stepping. Warsaw P parts validate to 2S and 4S clouds with 99 W cooling. Successor SP3 replaced the platform in 2017 with single die EPYC parts that never fit here.

The Warsaw refresh cut flagship power from 115 W and 140 W to 99 W for large cloud deployments, with about 27 percent better performance per watt than older 6300 parts.

Who Socket G34 serves

Socket G34 fits private cloud and virtualization clusters where threads per dollar decide the build. Twelve and sixteen core Warsaw parts at 99 W consolidate guests with low power per thread. Supermicro and Sugon shipped 2S and 4S nodes for large deployments.

Within the socket the choice is core count against clocks at fixed 99 W. The 6338P runs 12 cores at 2.3 GHz to 2.8 GHz while the 6370P runs 16 cores at 2.0 GHz to 2.5 GHz. Both share DDR3 ECC memory and the same chipsets, so density decides.

Memory and PCIe

Memory support is DDR3-1600 ECC over four channels per socket with registered DIMMs for large counts. Two channels feed each on package die. Even populations across sockets protect NUMA fairness for guests.

PCIe Gen 2 slots come from the SR5650, SR5670 and SR5690 chipsets rather than the CPU. HyperTransport links at up to 3.2 GHz carry die to die and socket to socket traffic. A 10 GbE fabric suits cluster links more than local accelerators.

Frequently asked questions

Which processors fit Socket G34?

Opteron 6000 series server parts including Magny-Cours, Interlagos, Abu Dhabi and Warsaw generations. EPYC needs SP3 and desktop FX parts need AM3+. The platforms never interchange.

Why do sources list both 1974 and 1944 contacts?

The CPU package carries 1944 lands while the socket holds 1974 contacts. The extra socket positions key the package and carry no signal on Warsaw parts.

What memory does Socket G34 use?

DDR3-1600 ECC over four channels per socket. Registered DIMMs allow large populations for virtualization hosts. Balance DIMMs across all sockets for NUMA fairness.

How many PCIe lanes does Socket G34 provide?

No PCIe lanes come from the CPU. HyperTransport 3.1 links tie the two on package dies and connect sockets, while PCIe Gen 2 slots hang off the SR5600 series chipset.
