FP6 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit
FP6 is AMD ball grid array package for mobile processors from Renoir in 2020 through Barcelo-R in 2023. It carries 1140 balls on a 0.65 mm non-uniform pitch with a package footprint of 25 × 35 mm and a height of 1.38 mm. Laptop makers solder the APU directly to the mainboard, so there is no replacement or socketed upgrade path.

Overview
The package supports two 64-bit channels of DDR4 to DDR4-3200 or four 32-bit subchannels of LPDDR4x to LPDDR4x-4267, with up to 64 GB on DDR4 boards and ECC available where the board wiring enables it. For expansion it brings 20 PCIe Gen3 lanes in total with 16 lanes usable from the APU, typically split between graphics, NVMe storage, wireless and SATA. Four display outputs, USB 3.2 Gen2, USB 2.0 and SATA Gen3 round out board IO.
Barcelo-R on FP6 pairs Zen 3 CPU cores with Vega graphics for thin laptops at 15 W, including the Ryzen 3 7330U, Ryzen 5 7530U and Ryzen 7 7730U plus PRO twins for business bodies. These chips followed Renoir, Cezanne and Barcelo on the same footprint, which let makers reuse thermal and board designs across generations. Boards for FP8 later moved to DDR5 and PCIe Gen4, while FT6 covers the smaller Mendocino Chromebook package, so FP6 remains the DDR4 era mobile socket.
Processor generations
| Codename | Marketing name | Years | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Renoir | Ryzen 4000 series | 2020 to 2021 | Zen 2 APUs with Vega graphics that introduced FP6 in March 2020 for 15 W U series and 45 W H series bodies. |
| Cezanne | Ryzen 5000 series | 2021 to 2022 | Zen 3 APUs with larger L3 and faster Vega graphics, carried on FP6 for U series and H series laptops. |
| Lucienne | Ryzen 5000 U series (Zen 2 refresh) | 2021 | 15 W thin laptop processors with 4 to 8 Zen 2 cores, launched in January 2021 with Vega graphics and DDR4 or LPDDR4x memory. |
| Cezanne-U | Ryzen 5000 U and HS series | 2021 | 15 W thin laptop processors with 4 to 6 cores plus 35 W HS parts, launched in January 2021 with Vega graphics and DDR4 or LPDDR4x memory. |
| Barcelo | Ryzen 5000 refresh | 2022 | Cezanne refresh with higher boost clocks for 2022 laptops, pin compatible with earlier FP6 boards at the system level. |
| Barcelo-R | Ryzen 7000 series | 2023 | Second Barcelo refresh sold as Ryzen 7000 U series, including 7330U, 7530U and 7730U plus PRO models for business laptops. |
Memory and IO on FP6 boards
FP6 boards use DDR4 SODIMM modules, soldered DDR4 down, or soldered LPDDR4x depending on thickness and price targets. AMD lists DDR4-3200 in two channels and LPDDR4x-4267 in four 32-bit subchannels, with up to 64 GB on DDR4 designs and up to 32 GB on LPDDR4x designs. ECC works only where the board routes the extra bits and the firmware enables it, which is common on embedded FP6 modules and rare on consumer thin laptops.
The 20 PCIe Gen3 lanes split into an 8-lane graphics interface that can run as one by 8 or two by 4 plus a 12-lane general purpose block for NVMe, SATA, wireless and on-board devices. In practice a thin laptop wires one NVMe by 4 link for storage, lanes for wireless, and SATA where a 2.5 inch bay remains. Four display pipes feed HDMI, DisplayPort and USB-C alternate mode through the Vega integrated graphics.
Cooling and board design
Every FP6 processor is soldered with a lidless micro ball grid array and stiffener frame, so cooler choice belongs to the laptop maker rather than the owner. Most 15 W Barcelo-R bodies use one heat pipe shared between CPU and GPU areas with a single blower fan, while 45 W H bodies add a second pipe or fan. Paste or pad replacement during service follows the maker manual, since die height and keep-out differ from FP8 and FT6.
Because the socket is not socketed in the desktop sense, upgrade planning happens at purchase time. Core count, graphics tier and memory size are fixed for the life of the board. A buyer who expects heavier compile or edit work later should choose the 8-core model up front, while a buyer focused on battery life and price can stay with the 4-core or 6-core model.
Identifying FP6 against FP7, FP8 and FT6
FP6 measures 25 × 35 mm with 1140 balls and serves DDR4 designs. FP8 is larger at 25 × 40 mm with 1140 balls in a different ball map and serves DDR5 designs for Phoenix and later, so boards and chips do not cross between them. FT6 is the Sonoma Valley package for Mendocino with LPDDR5 only for Chromebooks.
Marketing names can mislead, since Ryzen 7000 includes both FP6 Barcelo-R parts and FP8 Phoenix parts. The AMD product page lists the socket as FP6 or FP8 under package data, and that line decides board fit. When a support list names Ryzen 7 7730U it means FP6, while Ryzen 7 7840U means FP8.

Frequently asked questions
Can an FP6 processor be replaced or upgraded?
No. The processor is soldered to the board with BGA balls. Upgrading means replacing the board or the whole laptop, so choose core count and memory at order time.
What memory does FP6 use?
DDR4-3200 in two channels or LPDDR4x-4267 in four subchannels, up to 64 GB on DDR4 boards. ECC works only where the board enables it.
How many PCIe lanes does FP6 provide?
20 PCIe Gen3 lanes in total with 16 usable from the APU. Boards typically use them for discrete graphics options on H bodies, NVMe storage, wireless and SATA.
What is the difference between FP6 and FP8?
FP6 is the 25 × 35 mm DDR4 package for Ryzen 4000 to 7000 Barcelo-R laptops. FP8 is larger at 25 × 40 mm and uses DDR5 for Phoenix and later designs. Chips do not cross between them.
