Socket FP2 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit

Socket FP2, also called uBGA-827, is the AMD soldered package for Trinity and Richland mobile APUs. It carries 827 balls and solders directly to the notebook board. AMD released it in May 2012 with Trinity, followed by Richland in June 2013. Boards are vendor qualified per processor, so memory type, display outputs and power limits follow the laptop design rather than the package name.

Overview

The package combines Piledriver CPU modules with Radeon HD 8000G series graphics and the platform hub on one die. That integration suits thin laptops, where one soldered chip covers the processor, graphics and I/O without socket overhead. Standard voltage parts run at 35 W, low voltage parts at 25 W, and ultra low voltage parts at 17 W.

FP2 was superseded by FP3 and later mobile packages. Because the chip cannot be swapped, buying decisions should weigh the soldered memory and storage alongside the processor. A board replacement is the only CPU upgrade path, which rarely makes sense against a newer laptop.

Soldered package

FP2 processors solder with 827 balls and cannot be removed or replaced. There is no retention lever, no pin grid and no aftermarket mounting choice. Thermal design uses the system heatsink sized for the configured TDP, typically 17 W in thin ultraportables, 25 W in standard thin designs, and 35 W in larger mainstream bodies.

Because the chip cannot be swapped, the practical check before buying a used FP2 laptop is the condition of the whole system. Battery health, fan noise, hinge wear and storage size matter more than the exact APU model. A board replacement is the only CPU upgrade path, and it usually costs more than the laptop is worth.

Memory and I/O

FP2 designs use DDR3 memory in two channels, commonly DDR3L-1333 in 17 W ultra low voltage laptops and DDR3-1600 in 35 W mainstream laptops. Some designs solder the memory too, so capacity and speed are fixed at purchase. Display outputs, USB and storage lanes all hang off the single die through the board wiring.

PCIe connectivity is PCIe 2.0 with a lane layout that varies by board. Most laptops keep the graphics path internal to the integrated GPU and devote lanes to SATA storage, wireless and card readers. A discrete GPU is uncommon on FP2 boards, since the Radeon HD 8000G graphics already cover office work and light games.

Platform lifecycle

FP2 covers Trinity from May 2012 and Richland from June 2013. AMD moved on to FP3 for Kaveri mobile in June 2014, then to FP4 for Carrizo. New compatible boards are therefore used or old stock, not current retail.

For a working FP2 laptop the practical path is maintenance: fresh thermal paste, clean fans and an SSD upgrade where the board allows. A platform move means a new laptop on FP8 or newer, with DDR5 memory and current wireless. The How to find your CPU socket type guide explains how to confirm the package before ordering parts.

Frequently asked questions

Can an FP2 processor be replaced or upgraded?

No. The chip is soldered to the board with 827 balls. A faster laptop means a new board or a new machine. Memory on soldered boards also locks at purchase in many designs.

Which processors fit Socket FP2?

Trinity mobile APUs from 2012 and Richland mobile APUs from 2013, in 17 W ultra low voltage and 25 W to 35 W standard voltage classes. Socketed FS1r2 versions of the same silicon use Socket FS1r2 instead.

What memory does Socket FP2 use?

DDR3 and low voltage DDR3L in two channels. Ultra low voltage parts commonly use DDR3L-1333, while 35 W parts use DDR3-1600. Two matched modules feed the integrated graphics best.

How many PCIe lanes does Socket FP2 provide?

PCIe 2.0 from the APU for board devices, with SATA and USB from the board controller. Most laptops wire the graphics path to the integrated GPU and keep a small lane budget for storage and wireless.

What is the difference between FP2 and FS1r2?

FP2 at 827 balls is soldered and cannot be serviced. FS1r2 at 722 contacts is a pin grid array that allows replacement where the laptop design permits access. The two packages never interchange.
