What the Xeon X3480 is

The Intel Xeon X3480 is a quad core Lynnfield server processor that Intel launched on May 30, 2010 at 3.066 GHz with Turbo Boost to 3.733 GHz. Hyper-Threading gives eight threads from four Nehalem cores, backed by 256 KB of L2 per core and 8 MB of shared L3 cache. Power is rated at 95 W on a 45 nm process.

The X3480 tops the Xeon 3400 line for single socket entry servers on LGA 1156 with ECC support. Against the desktop i7-880 at the same clocks it adds ECC and TXT for server use. The $612 MSRP targeted small business towers.

Memory is DDR3-1333 ECC UDIMMs in two channels where boards wire them.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The Xeon X3480 fits LGA 1156 with 1156 lands. Server boards with 3400 series firmware boot Lynnfield Xeons directly. Desktop P55 boards rarely list X SKUs, so check the vendor list.

The socket table covers Lynnfield natively. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules, and the Intel Pentium G6950 page shows a dual core on the same socket.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR3-1333 ECC UDIMMs in two channels up to 16 GB on server boards.

PCIe 2.0 x16 comes from the CPU package for RAID and network cards.

Cooling is a server tower rated for 95 W on the 75 × 75 mm pattern.

Upgrade paths

On LGA 1156 there is no faster stock Xeon 3400 quad, so the path is a used X3480 or a move to Sandy Bridge Xeon E3. Keep the X3480 where ECC single socket towers still pay.

Frequently asked questions
