What the Pentium Silver J5040 is
The Pentium Silver J5040 is a four core, four thread desktop SoC from the Gemini Lake Refresh. It launched in November 2019 as the fastest of its family with a 2.0 GHz base and up to 3.2 GHz burst at 10 W. Goldmont Plus cores handle office multitasking without fans.
Four megabytes of shared L2 back four cores in media playback and browsing. The 400 MHz burst lift over older J5005 silicon shows in application launches. Ten watts keep sealed mini PCs cool through summer.
UHD Graphics 605 with 18 execution units up to 800 MHz lead Gemini Lake graphics for 4K playback. The chip tops fanless home theater and office mini PCs. Pentium Silver branding marks the faster graphics tier over Celeron.
Socket and motherboard compatibility
The J5040 solders to BGA 1090 on mini PC boards. Board makers validate passive cooling for 10 W continuous. There is no socketed equivalent.
Mini PCs wire DDR4 SODIMM slots plus M.2 storage around the SoC. Triple displays run through HDMI and DisplayPort. The LGA, PGA and BGA: CPU package types explained guide covers soldered device service.
LGA desktop boards cannot host the SoC. The BGA package serves mini PCs only.
Memory, PCIe and cooling
DDR4 or LPDDR4 up to 2400 MT/s in two channels up to 8 GB is the board memory. Home theater builds ship 4 or 8 GB. Dual channel operation feeds UHD 605 graphics.
Six PCIe 2.0 lanes wire NVMe or SATA storage plus Ethernet and Wi-Fi. A 256 GB SSD covers media libraries with network storage behind. USB 3.0 ports attach tuners and drives.
Passive heatsinks cool 10 W silently behind televisions. Vent clearance in cabinets matters more than heatsink mass. Storage swaps are the service path.
Upgrade paths
Soldered BGA blocks processor upgrades. Memory to 8 GB and larger SSDs extend media PC life. Network storage growth matters more than local speed.
A device change to Jasper Lake mini PCs brings faster cores for the next refresh. Inside Gemini Lake, the J5040 is already the ceiling.
