What the Pentium D 940 is

The Intel Pentium D 940 is a 3.2 GHz dual-core desktop processor from January 2006. It runs two NetBurst cores at 3.2 GHz with no Hyper-Threading, so 2 cores give 2 threads. Cache is 4 MB of L2 as two 2 MB dies on a 65 nm process. Power is rated at 130 W on LGA 775 in B1 stepping, with a later C1 stepping at 95 W.

The 940 served performance Presler towers on an 800 MT/s bus with a 16x multiplier at about 423 dollars launch price. It exists because buyers wanted 3.2 GHz dual cores with the full 4 MB cache where the board cools 130 W.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The 940 drops into LGA 775 boards with DDR2 memory and a BIOS that lists early Presler dual cores, such as 945 boards. Boards need voltage regulator support for the 130 W envelope. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR2 through the board chipset in two channels.

An 800 MT/s front side bus ties the CPU to the chipset. PCIe slots hang off the chipset.

Cooling is a 130 W rated LGA 775 heatsink on the 72 mm mount.

Upgrade paths

On LGA 775 the upgrade is the Pentium D 950 at 3.4 GHz with the same 4 MB cache at 130 W, or the Intel Pentium D 930 at 3 GHz for 95 W operation. Beyond LGA 775 a move to a newer platform needs a new board and memory.
