What the Core i7-5960X is
The Core i7-5960X Extreme Edition is the first eight core desktop flagship for HEDT on LGA 2011-v3. Intel set eight cores and 16 threads at 3.0 GHz base with turbo to 3.5 GHz. Twenty megabytes of Smart Cache feed renders and simulations. Power is 140 W on 22 nm from August 2014. It debuts DDR4 for client PCs with the X99 chipset and 40 PCIe lanes.
Eight cores with 16 threads cut multi thread times far below six core HEDT and mainstream quads. At 3.0 GHz base the chip favors throughput over single thread pace, with bursts to 3.5 GHz for interactive steps. The unlocked Extreme multiplier allows tuning on X99 with serious cooling. No integrated GPU exists, so discrete graphics are mandatory. Quad channel DDR4 supplies bandwidth for large data sets.
Forty PCIe 3.0 lanes support up to four graphics cards plus NVMe storage on boards that wire them. The 5960X is an HEDT socket for studios and labs where thread count decides schedules. Launch price talk in reviews sits near flagship levels, so used buyers should weigh boards, DDR4 and cooling as a set.
Socket and motherboard compatibility
The 5960X fits LGA 2011-v3 on X99 with Haswell-E launch firmware. Boards sold for Haswell-E run it from stock BIOS. LGA 2011 v1 and LGA 2066 never accept it. Check the maker CPU list for early board revisions.
DDR4 quad channel is the only memory type. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide is mainstream focused, so use X99 manuals for slot populations. Cooler mount is 80 × 80 mm from the CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide. No cooler ships with Extreme parts.
Later Broadwell-E needs a BIOS update on early X99. Flash with a supported Haswell-E chip where the board requires it.
Memory, PCIe and cooling
DDR4-2133 in four channels is the rated memory. Four or eight matched sticks unlock full bandwidth for rendering. Sixty four gigabytes suits studios with large scenes. Faster DDR4 kits run via XMP on X99. ECC is not offered on this desktop Extreme part.
PCIe is 40 lanes of PCIe 3.0 from the CPU in 2x16 plus 1x8 arrangements for graphics and NVMe. Multi GPU plus fast storage fit without mainstream limits. X99 chipset lanes add SATA Express and USB. Board manuals show sharing with U.2 and M.2 ports.
Cooling demands a large tower or liquid loop for 140 W with eight cores. All core turbo heat rises fast in closed cases. Keep strong front to back airflow and VRM cooling for long renders.
Upgrade paths
Within the socket the Intel Core i7-5930K at 3.5 GHz to 3.7 GHz with six cores is a higher clock sibling where thread count matters less. The Intel Core i7-5820K at 3.3 GHz to 3.6 GHz is the value six core on the same X99 boards. Both reuse DDR4.
A mainstream path is LGA 1150 with the Intel Core i7-4790K, trading cores for clocks. The 5960X covers flagship HEDT where eight cores are the brief.
