What the Core i5-8250U is

The Core i5-8250U is a four core, eight thread mobile processor from the 8th Gen Core family. It launched in August 2017 with a 1.6 GHz base and up to 3.4 GHz Turbo at 15 W. Four cores with Hyper-Threading doubled the thread count of prior i5 U parts, which changed thin laptop multitasking in a single generation.

Six megabytes of Smart Cache support office work with many tabs plus video calls. The low 1.6 GHz base keeps fan noise down in meetings, while 3.4 GHz burst gives quick peaks for loads and filters. Configurable TDP from 10 W to 25 W lets makers tune the same silicon for fanless tablets or performance ultrabooks.

UHD Graphics 620 from 300 MHz to 1100 MHz drives laptop displays and 4K output over DisplayPort. The graphics block matches prior HD 620 output with a new name. Office buyers run triple displays through dock stations without a discrete GPU.

On 14 nm the 8250U solders to thin boards with DDR4 or LPDDR3. Intel launched it at $297 tray pricing for makers. It became the volume quad core of 2018 ultrabooks, against the dual core i5-7200U before it.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The 8250U solders to BGA 1356 and cannot be replaced. Laptop choice fixes processor, memory ceiling and graphics for the life of the machine. Board makers set TDP between 10 W and 25 W in firmware.

Thin laptops pair the chip with DDR4-2400 SODIMM slots or soldered LPDDR3-2133. Buyers should check whether memory solders down, since many 8250U bodies fix 8 GB. The How to find your CPU socket type guide shows where specs list the BGA package.

The Core i5-8350U on the same package adds 100 MHz base and 200 MHz burst for business models with vPro style management. The Intel Core i3-8130U is the dual core alternative on BGA 1356 where cost matters.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

DDR4-2400 or LPDDR3-2133 in two channels up to 32 GB is the memory support. Bandwidth peaks near 37.5 GB per sec with matched DDR4 modules. Two channels matter for graphics, so single module bodies lose pace.

Twelve PCIe 3.0 lanes from the CPU wire NVMe SSDs and board devices in 1x4, 2x2 and similar splits. Laptop designs typically give four lanes to a fast SSD. Speeds cover boot and project files rather than arrays.

Fifteen watts cool with a single thin fan and heat pipe. Configurable TDP down to 10 W at 800 MHz suits fanless designs, while 25 W at 1.8 GHz suits performance bodies. Paste and fan cleaning follow the laptop maker manual.

Upgrade paths

There is no CPU upgrade on soldered BGA 1356. The only moves are a larger SSD where the slot allows it or a whole laptop replacement. Memory soldered down also blocks growth, so choose 16 GB at order where offered.

Staying on the board, an NVMe SSD and a clean OS install help more than clock chasing. The locked multiplier removes overclocking. The LGA, PGA and BGA: CPU package types explained guide frames soldered laptop limits.
