What the Core i3-4160 is

The Core i3-4160 is a Haswell refresh clock for mainstream towers on LGA 1150. Intel set two cores and four threads at 3.6 GHz with 3 MB of Smart Cache. Power is 54 W on 22 nm from July 2014. It adds 100 MHz over the i3-4150 with no change in boards or memory.

A 100 MHz lift helps single thread office programs that set the pace for data entry and browsing. Four threads keep antivirus scans and sync tools from pausing foreground work. With an SSD the system feels quick for everyday business use. The chip is a volume fleet option where a small clock gain costs nothing in cooling.

HD Graphics 4400 from 350 MHz to 1.15 GHz handles office monitors. DDR3-1333 and 1600 plus DDR3L options across two channels to 32 GB feed the part. It is a plain Haswell socket with mature drivers and wide board support.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The 4160 fits LGA 1150 on 8 series chipsets such as H81, B85, H87 and Z87, and on 9 series chipsets such as H97 and Z97. Haswell is native on both, so most boards run it from shipping BIOS. Check the maker list for the exact board when moving used chips between OEM systems.

Mounting is 75 × 75 mm for stock and tower coolers. The CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide shows options. Chips for LGA 1151 never fit. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers series differences.

H81 with two DIMMs is enough for office use. B85 adds ports for fleets. Z boards work but do not unlock this locked part.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

DDR3-1333 and 1600 with DDR3L variants in dual channel to 32 GB is the spec. Eight gigabytes suits office images. Two sticks aid graphics in calls. XMP DDR3 kits can run on Z boards where the manual allows.

Sixteen PCIe 3.0 lanes from the CPU feed one slot. Most 4160 builds keep integrated video. Chipset PCIe 2.0 lanes add SATA and USB. Nine series boards list M.2 adapter support per model.

Stock 54 W cooling holds 3.6 GHz in towers. The 37.5 × 37.5 mm FCLGA1150 package fits push pin coolers. Keep airflow over the board for stable daytime use.

Upgrade paths

Within the socket the Intel Core i3-4150 at 3.5 GHz is a slightly slower twin on the same boards. The Intel Core i3-4360 at 3.7 GHz with 4 MB of cache and HD Graphics 4600 adds cache, clocks and stronger graphics for multitasking. Both reuse DDR3.

DDR4 needs a new socket and board. The 4160 covers mainstream Haswell desks where 3.6 GHz threads are enough.
