What the Altra Q64-22 is

The Ampere Altra Q64-22 is a 64-core server processor with a 2.2 GHz sustained frequency. It runs 64 single-thread Arm v8.2+ cores with no turbo, so 64 cores give 64 threads. Cache is 1 MB of L2 per core plus system cache on a 7 nm process. Power is rated at 95 W max with about 69 W usage power in a 4926-pin FCLGA package with order part number AC-106409502.

Low clocks with a sub-100 W envelope give the Q64-22 the best efficiency in the 64-core line, which is why it suits edge servers with limited cooling. Ampere sold the Q64-22 in the launch lineup. The chip supports enterprise RAS.

Efficient clocks with 64 cores suit edge and power-constrained cloud servers with DDR4 memory. That is why the Q64-22 shipped in edge boxes and microATX developer systems.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The Q64-22 fits LGA 4926 efficient servers with Altra support. It needs a 4926-land board with Ampere firmware and a BIOS that lists the Q64-22. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules.

Edge servers and deep microATX boards are the natural match. Boards listing the Q64-22 accept the chip with a 95 W heatsink.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is eight channels of DDR4-3200 ECC through the on-chip controllers, up to 4 TB per socket. PCIe Gen4 with 128 lanes per socket feeds storage and networking. Cooling uses compact server heatsinks rated for 95 W.

Upgrade paths

On the same socket, a move to an Altra Q64-30 such as Ampere Altra Q64-30 adds 800 MHz at 180 W when frequency matters. An Altra Q32-17 such as Ampere Altra Q32-17 halves cores to 32 at 65 W for smaller nodes.

A move to Altra Max adds density. The LGA 4926 page lists the range.
