What the Sempron LE-1300 is

The AMD Sempron LE-1300 is the fastest Sparta single core, a 2.3 GHz budget part from October 2007. It runs one K8 core at 2.3 GHz with no turbo, so 1 core gives 1 thread. Cache is 512 KB of L2 on a 65 nm process. Power is rated at 45 W on Socket AM2.

The LE-1300 tops the 65 nm Sempron single-core line on the Sparta G2 stepping with a 1000 MHz HyperTransport link. It exists because AMD stretched the cheapest AM2 single core to 2.3 GHz for office buyers who needed a little more speed without leaving Sempron prices.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The LE-1300 drops into Socket AM2 boards with DDR2 memory and needs no special chipset or BIOS beyond standard Sparta support. It pairs with 700 series DDR2 boards contemporary with AM2 parts. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR2-667 and DDR2-800 in two channels.

HyperTransport at 1000 MHz links the CPU to the chipset. PCIe slots hang off the chipset.

Cooling is any 45 W rated heatsink on the 48 x 96 mm mount, with Cool'n'Quiet trimming clocks and voltage at idle.

Upgrade paths

On Socket AM2 the LE-1300 is the Sparta single-core ceiling, so the moves are the AMD Sempron LE-1250 at 2.2 GHz or the AMD Sempron LE-1200 at 2.1 GHz for cheaper Semprons. The AMD Athlon 64 3200+ at 2.0 GHz is the Lima alternative. Beyond AM2 a move to AM2+ or AM3 needs a new board for Phenom class parts.
