What the Threadripper 3960X is

The Threadripper 3960X is a twenty four core, forty eight thread HEDT processor from the Castle Peak family. It launched in November 2019 at 1399 dollars with a 3.8 GHz base and up to 4.5 GHz boost at 280 W. Four Zen 2 chiplets plus an I/O die share one large package.

Twelve megabytes of L2 and 128 MB of L3 feed rendering, simulation and compilation across 24 cores. Quad channel DDR4-3200 moves large scenes without the lane limits of mainstream boards. The 280 W rating needs serious cooling and a strong power supply.

There is no integrated graphics, so workstation builds start with a discrete Quadro or Radeon Pro. The unlocked multiplier allows tuning on TRX40 boards. The 3960X suits creators who need half the cores of the 3970X at a lower price.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The 3960X fits sTRX4 on TRX40 motherboards only. First and second generation Threadripper boards with TR4 and X399 chipsets do not accept it despite the similar package. The board list decides, since sTRX4 is electrically distinct.

TRX40 boards wire quad channel memory in eight slots up to 256 GB. Power stages with active VRM cooling hold 280 W sustained. The large TR4-SP3 mount with a carrier frame sets heatsink choice from the board vendor list.

The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide explains why HEDT fit follows socket plus board firmware rather than chipset series.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

DDR4-3200 ECC UDIMM in four channels up to 256 GB is the workstation standard. Eight matched sticks fill the bandwidth for 8K timelines. ECC guards long renders against memory errors.

Sixty four PCIe 4.0 lanes from the CPU serve multiple GPUs and Gen4 NVMe RAID, with 88 total lanes counting the chipset. A 3960X with two workstation cards and three NVMe SSDs fits the lane budget. Gen4 SSDs reach full speed on TRX40 wiring.

Cooling needs a large TR4-SP3 tower or 360 mm liquid for 280 W. Paste application follows the multi die pattern in the manual. See the CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide for mount notes.

Upgrade paths

On sTRX4 the 32-core AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X adds threads for rendering on the same board. Both reuse memory and cooling. The 24 to 32 core move helps most with background rendering.

Beyond the socket the replacement is a Threadripper PRO workstation on sWRX8 or a current Ryzen desktop. For 3960X rigs, GPU and NVMe upgrades usually beat processor swaps.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the Ryzen Threadripper 3960X use?

It uses sTRX4 on TRX40 motherboards.

Does the 3960X work on X399 boards?

No. sTRX4 is electrically distinct from TR4, so only TRX40 boards accept it.

How many cores does the 3960X have?

Twenty four cores with forty eight threads at 3.8 GHz base and up to 4.5 GHz boost.

What memory does the 3960X take?

DDR4-3200 ECC UDIMM in four channels up to 256 GB.

When did the 3960X launch?

November 25, 2019 at 1399 dollars.
