What the Opteron 1352 (B3) is

The AMD Opteron 1352 (B3) is a 2.1 GHz single-socket server quad core from June 2008. It runs four K10 cores at 2.1 GHz with no turbo, so 4 cores give 4 threads. Cache is 512 KB of L2 per core under a shared 2 MB L3 on a 65 nm process. Power is rated at 95 W TDP with 75 W ACP on Socket AM2+.

Budapest is the single-socket server version of Agena for AM2+ uniprocessor servers. The B3 stepping, part OS1352WBJ4BGH, carries the hardware fix for the TLB bug in earlier steppings, and its HyperTransport link runs at 2.0 GHz. ACP reflects average data-center power against the 95 W thermal ceiling.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The 1352 (B3) fits single-socket Socket AM2+ server boards with DDR2 memory and a BIOS that lists Budapest Opteron parts. It is a uniprocessor-only chip, so dual-socket boards are out. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is unbuffered DDR2-800 in two channels, up to PC2-6400 per the server memory list.

A 2.0 GHz HyperTransport link ties the CPU to the server chipset. PCIe Gen 2 slots hang off the chipset.

Cooling uses vendor qualified server heatsinks with threaded backplates for the 95 W envelope in 1U chassis with directed airflow.

Upgrade paths

On Socket AM2+ the upgrade is the AMD Opteron 1354 (B3) at 2.2 GHz or the AMD Opteron 1356 (B3) at 2.3 GHz on the same fixed stepping. The AMD Opteron 1352 (B2) is the same speed on the older B2 stepping. Beyond AM2+ a move to a newer Opteron platform needs a new board and memory.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the Opteron 1352 (B3) use?

Socket AM2+, in single-socket server boards with DDR2 memory.

How many cores does the Opteron 1352 (B3) have?

Four cores and 4 threads at 2.1 GHz with 512 KB of L2 per core plus 2 MB of shared L3.

What is the difference between the Opteron 1352 (B3) and 1352 (B2)?

The B3 stepping has the hardware fix for the TLB bug in the B2 stepping; ACP is average data-center power against the 95 W thermal ceiling.
