What the Athlon 64 3000+ is

The AMD Athlon 64 3000+ is a 1.8 GHz single-core desktop processor from May 2006. It runs one K8 core at 1.8 GHz with no turbo, so 1 core gives 1 thread. Cache is 512 KB of L2 on a 90 nm process. Power is rated at 62 W on Socket AM2.

The Orleans 3000+ opened the Socket AM2 Athlon 64 line on an 800 MT/s HyperTransport link with a 9x multiplier. It exists because buyers wanted a DDR2 Athlon 64 at the entry 1.8 GHz clock. Note that Socket 754 Venice parts share the 3000+ number with different voltage bins and need different boards.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The 3000+ drops into Socket AM2 boards with DDR2 memory and a BIOS that lists Orleans single cores. It does not fit Socket 754 boards despite the shared 3000+ number. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR2-667 and DDR2-800 in two channels through the on-chip controller.

HyperTransport at 800 MT/s links the CPU to the chipset. PCIe slots hang off the chipset.

Cooling is any 62 W rated AM2 heatsink on the 48 × 96 mm mount, with CoolnQuiet trimming draw at idle.

Upgrade paths

On Socket AM2 the upgrade is an Athlon 64 X2 Windsor dual core such as the AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ at 2 GHz on the same board. Beyond AM2 a move to AM2+ or AM3 needs a new board for Phenom class parts.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the Athlon 64 3000+ use?

Socket AM2, on DDR2 boards with an Orleans-aware BIOS. Socket 754 3000+ parts need different boards.

How many cores does the Athlon 64 3000+ have?

One core and 1 thread at 1.8 GHz with 512 KB of L2 cache.

What memory works with the Athlon 64 3000+?

DDR2 in two channels through the on-chip controller.
