What the A6-9220e SoC is

The AMD A6-9220e SoC is a 1.6 GHz dual-core soldered mobile processor from January 2019. It runs one Excavator module with 2 cores at 1.6 GHz base and up to 2.4 GHz boost, so 2 cores give 2 threads. Cache is 1 MB of shared L2 on a 28 nm process with 1.2 billion transistors. Power is rated at 6 W in a Socket FT4 BGA package.

The e suffix marks the efficient tuning below the 9220C at 1.8 GHz with the same Radeon R4 graphics, which is why the 9220e at 1.6 GHz suits passively cooled embedded boards. AMD sold the 9220e in January 2019 with the C parts. The chip supports AVX, AVX2, AES and AMD-V with Radeon R4 with 3 compute cores at 600 MHz.

Lower clocks with a 6 W envelope suit soldered embedded boards with DDR4-2133 memory. The single-channel path and 8 PCIe Gen 3 lanes cover storage and wireless. That is why the 9220e shipped in compact embedded systems.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The A6-9220e SoC is soldered to FT4 boards and cannot be replaced. It fits embedded boards with FT4 solder lands and firmware that lists the A6-9220e. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules.

Compact embedded boards are the natural match. Boards built for the 9220e carry the soldered SoC with a board spreader for the 6 W class.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is single-channel DDR4-2133 through the on-chip controller. PCIe Gen 3 with 8 lanes from the APU feeds storage and wireless. Graphics is Radeon R4 with 3 compute cores at 600 MHz. Thermal design is board-level with a spreader.

Upgrade paths

There is no CPU upgrade path from a soldered 9220e. The chip cannot move to a faster part. A board or system replacement is the only move.

For planning, an A6-9220C such as AMD A6-9220C SoC is the Chromebook twin at 1.8 GHz on the same lands. The Socket FT4 page lists the Stoney Ridge range.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the A6-9220e SoC use?

Socket FT4 as a soldered BGA package. It is a 6 W Stoney Ridge mobile part at 1.6 GHz to 2.4 GHz and it cannot be replaced.

Can the A6-9220e be replaced?

No. The balls are soldered to the board.

What memory does the A6-9220e use?

Single-channel DDR4-2133 through the on-chip controller.

What is the upgrade path from the A6-9220e?

There is none at the CPU level. An A6-9220C board is the faster FT4 twin.
